Grimm discovery: Nanaimo RCMP investigating after pins found inside meat products

Apr 30, 2018 | 1:58 PM

NANAIMO — Police are investigating after multiple reports of small pins found stuck inside meat products bought at several Nanaimo grocery stores.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said there were three reported incidents between December of last year and early April of people finding sewing pins stuck inside packages of Grimm’s long and short pepperoni sticks and Ukrainian sausage. The packages were bought at Real Canadian Superstore, Costco and Fairway Market.

“We are satisfied through our investigation it’s happening once the products have been placed on the shelves,” O’Brien said, adding Grimm’s and the local stores cooperated fully with the investigation.

O’Brien said while no one was hurt in any of the three incidents, it easily could have resulted in serious harm because the pins were stuck inside the meat.

He would not speculate on a motive for the tampering and said there were no other reports involving Grimm’s or other meat products in Nanaimo.

“We’ve had situations, not like this, where product was tampered with. But nothing in recent memory of anybody putting a sharp object inside a food product.”

O’Brien urged people to be vigilant in checking their meat products and packaging for any signs of tampering. He said it’s important for people to report any incidents like this to police.

At this point police have no suspects and are asking anyone with information to contact Nanaimo RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
