Heavy rains cause 3 crashes and havoc on Nanaimo roads

NANAIMO — After months of dry weather, RCMP say the recent rains have caught drivers by surprise and caused accidents. 

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW two cars flipped and ended up in ditches Tuesday morning. O’Brien said the drivers were taken to the hospital but not seriously injured. 

A third car ended up in the ditch near Duke Point. O’Brien couldn’t confirm the extent of the injuries. 

“Motorists aren’t used to wet roads at this point and the weather has changed considerably in the last 24 hours. The bottom line is: people need to slow down and use caution.”

O’Brien said keeping a safe distance between cars, at least a few seconds, is critical in rainy conditions.

“What’s going to happen is, the roads are wet and you’re not going to have braking power, so you have to keep that in mind.” 

Traffic was significantly delayed due to the crashes. RCMP remind everyone to watch their speed in the rain and use extra caution.
