Strong advanced voting turnout for vacant Nanaimo Council seat

NANAIMO — Interest appears high in Saturday’s by-election to fill a vacant Nanaimo City Council seat.

More than 1,300 people voted during two advanced voting opportunities, chief electoral officer Sheila Gurrie said.

Gurrie said more than 900 people alone cast their ballot on the second day at Nanaimo Alliance Church.

In comparison, Gurrie noted 500 people took advantage of advanced voting in the Nanaimo City Council by-election in 2011, which represented just 10 per cent of eligible voters.
