PENTICTON, B.C. — Residents of 18 homes evacuated when a wildfire ripped through the south Okanagan community of Kaleden, B.C., can now return home.

Emergency Info BC says that although the evacuation order was rescinded a day after a wildfire roared to life, 165 homes in the area remain on evacuation alert.

BC Wildfire Service spokesman Max Birkner says crews managed to fully contain the 6.5-hectare fire by Wednesday afternoon, although its expected to continue burning for some time.

The fire destroyed one home Tuesday and a member of Kaleden’s volunteer fire department says several outbuildings were also lost.
