Nanaimo police issue warning to pedestrians after woman hit while jaywalking

Jun 22, 2017 | 5:20 PM

NANAIMO — A 21-year-old woman was hit by a car while trying to cross the Pearson Bridge on Terminal Ave. in Nanaimo.

The woman was hit at about 6 a.m. Wednesday morning by a southbound car and taken to Nanaimo Hospital with undetermined injuries, Nanaimo RCMP said.

Cpl. Jon Stuart told NanaimoNewsNOW the driver remained on scene and cooperated with investigators.

“It appears that the pedestrian was not using a location that had a designated crosswalk to cross the highway.”

He said charges are not being pursued against the driver.

Stuart said while there hasn’t been a notable uptick in pedestrians being hit in Nanaimo lately, now is a good time to remind everybody who uses the roads to be more careful.

He said summer means extended daylight hours, including often difficult backdrops like twilight and glaring sun which can challenging.

“Weather is always a factor, if it’s a bright sunny day and you’re driving into the sun you may not be able to see as well when there’s pedestrians using the sidewalk or the side of the road. You can wear your sunglasses or put your visor down.”

Nanaimo RCMP Supt. Cameron Miller singled out jaywalking as a public safety concern while laying out the department’s policing priorities at Monday’s City Council meeting.
