Rainfall drills Nanaimo area in April

May 1, 2017 | 6:13 PM

NANAIMO — April showers took on a whole new meaning with 144 mm of rain pouring down locally, the second most amount all-time in April in Nanaimo, according to Environment Canada.

Meteorologist Alyssa Charbonneau said April’s downpour followed the 11th wettest March recorded on the mid-island.

Environment Canada has been record-keeping for the past 125-years.

Charbonneau said relief for the sun-starved appears to be in sight with a ridge of high-pressure likely settling in by this weekend.

“Which would bring some sun and dry conditions for us and temperatures warming up as well,” Chardbonneau told NanaimoNewsNOW. “We still have a little bit more rainy weather to get through, there is some drier weather on the horizen we can all look forward to.”

Charbonneau said their seasonal outlook indicates May, June and July could be slightly warmer than normal.

A soaker of a spring on the mid-island continued a theme of wild seasonal weather extremes.

A prolonged snowy and cold winter pounded the region, which was preceded by a much wetter than normal fall and one of the hottest summers of all-time.
