NANAIMO — Mounties have found a man connected to a missing Nanaimo teen.

However, Cst. Gary O’Brien said the search for Makayla Chang, 16, is still very active.

“We want the public to know we have located Mr. (Steven) Bacon and investigators have spoken with him,” O’Brien said. “It’s essential that the public knows this because we’re receiving dozens of tips every day on where he is. We want the public to now focus on assisting us in locating Makayla.”

O’Brien would not say where Bacon was found or if the information he provided furthered the investigation. “Simply that investigators have spoken with him and he provided information to them…We’re gathering information from a variety of sources, Mr. Bacon is one of them.”

Bacon was never a person of interest or a suspect but police released his picture as part of the investigation, believing he might know where Chang was.

Chang hasn’t been seen or heard from since March 19 and has not been active on social media. The investigation involved a multi-day search of a Bruce Ave. home and Search and Rescue teams scouring Colliery Dam Park.

“Safe to say we have sufficient resources in place, they are working full-time, it is the priority in our detachment,” O’Brien said of the resources dedicated to the search.

Chang is described as 5’1″, 110 lbs. with dyed red hair and hazel eyes. She often wears wigs and sometimes presents as a man.

Anyone with information is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 and Crime Stoppers.
