Man shot by RCMP in B.C.’s Interior identified as Nanaimo suspect

Feb 1, 2017 | 2:58 PM

NANAIMO — A man shot by RCMP in Salmon Arm has been identified online as a man wanted by Nanaimo RCMP for skipping a court appearance.

According to a GoFundMe page set up by Terita Hiebert, Kaymen Winter is in critical condition after being shot by RCMP in an incident Monday, Jan. 30.

Winter is wanted by Nanaimo RCMP for not appearing in court on Jan. 10 to answer for credit card fraud charges.

The incident in Salmon Arm is currently under investigation by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO).

NanaimoNewsNOW affiliate CFJC Today in Kamloops reported police responded to a theft in progress just after midnight at what has now been identified as a car wash.

IIO said the suspect, now revealed online to be Kaymen Winter, tried to flee the scene and was shot by officers.

In the GoFundMe page, Hiebert said Winter was unarmed and was allegedly shot in the shoulder and head, leaving a “big exit hole.”

“He’s a young kid with a heart of gold who was from what we gather in the wrong place at the wrong time,” she said on the page. “We think the police handled this completely the wrong way.”

IIO is still investigating.
