NANAIMO — A local woman needed workers at Casino Nanaimo to help verify a recent lotto win.

Marie Hobenshield won $500,000 as an Extra prize from the April 13 Lotto 6/49 draw, marking the latest in a long list of winners from the mid-Island to win half a million or more on BCLC games.

She initially thought it was a much smaller win.

“I went into [Casino Nanaimo] to check my ticket,” Hobsenshield said. “I thought it was $5 and the attendant said, ‘Look again!’ People were hugging me and congratulating me.”

Hobenshield, who lives in Nanoose Bay, then called her daughter and son-in-law to share the good news.

Hobenshield already has detailed plans for the money including helping her grandchildren with post-secondary school fees.

A trip to Germany, the birthplace of her late husband, is also on the horizon.

“It was his dream to have the entire family visit there, so I am excited to honour that.”

More than two dozen tickets purchased on the mid-Island since 2012 have won at least $500,000 or more.
