NANAIMO — A man with a long criminal history has been charged with nine criminal code offenses following several robberies and a stabbing on the mid-island.

31-year-old Jeffrey Brian MacDonald is accused in three robberies: Sept. 7 at the Bowen Road 7/11, Sept. 12 at the Mac’s Convenience Store on Departure Bay Road and Sept. 16 at the Shell Gas Station in Ladysmith.

Police also allege that MacDonald stabbed a 55-year-old good samaritan several times in the chest on Sept. 21 and stole his truck on Highway 19 near Qualicum Beach. Mounties report the victim stopped to help MacDonald, whose truck had broken down, but he then allegedly stabbed the man and stole his truck.

MacDonald was arrested by Oceanside RCMP on Sept. 23.

“Very significant, not only for Nanaimo,” said Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien. “Mr. MacDonald is well known throughout central Vancouver Island, he’s also had numerous contacts with police not only in British Columbia, but Alberta and Ontario spanning back about ten years.”

O’Brien said MacDonald has more than 30 criminal convictions dating back to 2005, including break and enter, stolen property and weapons offenses. He added that most of MacDonald’s convictions have taken place in the mid-island region.

MacDonald made his first court appearance on Nov. 7.

He remains in custody until his next scheduled court appearance on Dec. 6 in Nanaimo, according to O’Brien.
