Random Act of Kindness Day aims to spread good will

Nov 4, 2016 | 10:58 AM

NANAIMO – It’s a good day to make kindness a priority.

It’s Random Act of Kindness Day, where you’re encouraged to take note of something positive done for you and then pay it forward. Laurie Bienert of the Nanaimo Foundation says it doesn’t have to be a grand gesture.

“That’s the beauty of it. It can be something very simple,” said Bienert. “It doesn’t have to cost you anything. You could help tutor a student, could hold a door for somebody or if you’re wanting to spend a little money, buy coffee for your co-workers.”

Bienert says they have a list of 101 ideas for paying it forward on the Nanaimo Foundation Facebook page.

Earlier in the week, Mayor Marc Lefebvre proclaimed Nov. 4 Random Act of Kindness Day in Parksville. Lefebvre believes it’s a good fit for his city, adding the Parksville-Qualicum Foundation initiative will help further what people are already doing in Parksville.

“I think it kind of encourages what’s going on now by some people,” said Lefebvre. “And that encouragement may very well branch out to other people in the community who are saying to themselves, ‘what can I do, or how can I contribute’. This is one way to contribute.”

Lefebvre says there are a lot of people in Parksville that anonymously contribute to a number of community causes.
