Gas station, fast food likely tenants for strategic Nanoose FN land

NANOOSE — The Chief of Nanoose First Nation says a timeline is in place for their business development on Highway 19 at Lantzville Road.

Brent Edwards says upcoming community meetings will discuss how the development will proceed, noting a gas station and fast food restaurant are the probable tenants for the strategic piece of property.

“Hopefully we can have that all nailed down by the end of October,” said Edwards.

He hopes construction will start soon after and the project, which marks phase one of a commercial development plan for Nanoose First Nation, will be complete by as early as next spring.

Edwards says the project, which includes a traffic light at Highway 19 and Lantzville Road, will help build economic stability for their small band of about 140 members, on just 160 acres.

“Obviously it’s going to a catalyst to other things in the future. More traffic that can be driven there, that’s more opportunities that can derived for our little community here.”

Edwards estimates upwards of 40,000 vehicles drive by their reserve on the highway every day.
