B.C. IIO clears Nanaimo RCMP after injury during mental health call

NANAIMO — The province’s Independent Investigations Office cleared local Mounties of wrongdoing after a woman broke her foot following an interaction with police.

A woman, who had been reported missing after leaving her adult care home, was located in the evening of March 29, 2022 at Port Place Shopping Centre. She was detained under the Mental Health Act and officers took her to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

During her stay in hospital, the woman received surgery on a broken foot, prompting an investigation by the IIO involving the review of medical records, witness statements and surveillance video.

“Based on this evidence, the CCD (Chief Civilian Director) has determined that the injury did not take place while the woman was in police custody or in the presence of police, but approximately four hours after police had left the hospital,” a statement from the IIO read.

The IIO closed their investigation into the incident and no further action will be taken.

The agency is an independent police watchdog organization which investigates cases of people seriously harmed or killed during or following an interaction with police.

IIO investigations are prompted whether or not allegations of wrongdoing occur.
