Nanaimo area lakes stocked with trout ahead of spring fishing season

NANAIMO — Several Nanaimo area lakes received their latest top-up as spring and summer fishing season approaches.

The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC online stocking report showed 7,800 catchable rainbow sized trout were piped into eight regularly stocked lakes in Nanaimo between March 1 and March 9.

Westwood Lake received the most new fish with 2,300, Long Lake had an injection of 1,500 new fish, while Green and Brannen lakes were topped up with 1,000 new fish each.

Five hundred additional fish were added to Diver Lake and all three Colliery Dams.

Spider Lake west of Qualicum Beach received 2,000 new rainbow trout during the latest re-stocking effort.

In the range of 20,000 rainbow trout are piped into lakes in Nanaimo multiple times annually, according to online stocking reports from the Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C.

The society places upwards of of 200,000 trout each year into 60 Vancouver Island lakes, with most of them located in urban settings to offset demand by recreational fishing.
