NANAIMO — Last year it was a global pandemic, this year Mother Nature won’t cooperate.

The Nanaimo Lions Club Santa Claus parade, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 27 is cancelled for another year with organizers citing another series of storms due over the weekend.

“Another series of atmospheric river events is forecast for the area on Thursday, Saturday and next Tuesday and this was felt to form a hazard for participants and onlookers,” a release from the Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce read.

Organizers also said the provincial fuel rationing and fragile nature of area highways after the weekend rainfall were contributing factors.

Other related Christmas events are still scheduled.

A Santa Fly-In through Harbour Air will take place on four consecutive Saturday’s, beginning Nov. 27.

It will see families fly with Santa before landing at the Nanaimo waterfront for a walk to Gingerbread Village on Commercial St.

The village itself is open from Saturday through Dec. 19 with activities for families and children.
