NANAIMO – The efforts to preserve history, specifically Asian-Canadian history, has earned a VIU professor provincial recognition.

Dr. Imogene Lim was among the recipients of the Medal of Good Citizenship announced this week, though she’s the first to say the recognition should be shared among everyone she’s worked with on many projects.

Projects include one of the first heritage plaques in Nanaimo commemorating the since burned-down Chinatown and an upcoming exhibit about racism in central Island communities.

“It’s part of my background,” Lim told NanaimoNewsNOW. “I’m the descendent of two pioneer families….It’s that memory pushing me to ensure those historic communities are in fact acknowledged.”

Dr. Lim said the effort is needed more than ever as the tales of history are increasingly lost to time.

“When I see what might be viewed as social injustices, it’s like ‘Excuse me!” It’s time to say something, to remind us that these things happened in the past. For some people they’re not paying attention to history. I would say that so many people are just so caught up in the moment.”

The province noted Lim’s voice is often heard and well-received when advocating for B.C. issues which affect areas other than Vancouver and Victoria.
