NANAIMO — The City of Nanaimo didn’t have to look far for its new fire chief.

Deputy chief Tim Doyle has been named the new head of Nanaimo Fire Rescue (NFR) nearly two months after former chief Karen Fry left the organization.

Doyle had served as the department’s interim chief since the new year after Fry was named the new chief of Vancouver Fire Rescue Services.

A City of Nanaimo news release stated Doyle was selected among dozens of applicants from across Canada.

Doyle had been with NFR for the past 20 years, previously serving as assistant chief and more recently as deputy chief.

“Having built a reputation as an effective leader, collaborator and educator, acting fire chief Doyle’s deep expertise in public safety will be invaluable to the community as he leads Nanaimo Fire Rescue in this exciting new chapter,” the release stated.
