Man seriously injured after crash closes highway in south Nanaimo

Aug 1, 2018 | 10:56 AM

NANAIMO — A serious crash involving two trucks in south Nanaimo shut down a busy section of the Trans-Canada Hwy. for hours.

Nanaimo RCMP Cpl. Terry Crawford said it happened Wednesday just prior to 5 a.m. when a pair of full-sized pickups collided at the Cranberry Rd. intersection. He said one truck was traveling south, while the other going north attempted a left turn from the highway onto Cranberry Rd.

“Both males were transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for treatment, one man has rather serious injuries.”

Crawford said the man headed south was more seriously hurt.

The other driver has minor injuries, according to Crawford, who said both trucks had no one else inside.

Crawford told NanaimoNewsNOW it does not appear the crash will end up being a criminal investigation.

“At this point we’re gathering witness statements to get a clear picture of exactly what happened and how the impact occurred.”

Detours diverted traffic in both directions while the busy intersection was closed for nearly three hours.
