NANAIMO — New numbers from Statistics Canada show a slight rise in unemployment in the Nanaimo area.

The federal agency pegs the mid-island region’s jobless rate in December at 6.6 per cent, up from 6.2 per cent in November.

However, when compared to Dec. 2015 data it’s much lower. The Nanaimo area’s unemployment rate then was 7.1 per cent.

December’s national jobless rate was 6.9 per cent, while B.C.’s rate was just 5.8.
