Norman Easson Winton, September 17, 1935 – August 27, 2026

Norm Winton of Nanaimo passed peacefully on August 27, 2026, surrounded by loving family. He was incredibly well-read, loved jazz and golf, was deeply ethical and quietly brilliant. He was devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren. His passing leaves the world a sadder place, but we are grateful for everything he taught us.

Norrie was born in Perth, Scotland on September 17, 1935. He grew up with older brother, Bill (Kate), and younger sister, Ray (Gerry Rose). He studied Civil Engineering at the University of St. Andrews. His career and curiosity took him far and wide. He and the love of his life Janet (nee McArthur) moved to Perth, Western Australia where they welcomed their son, Grant (Shelley). They returned to Scotland and welcomed daughter, Ann (Rob Tuck), before emigrating again to Edmonton, Canada. While based in Edmonton, his engineering projects took the family to live in Belize and Penang, Malaysia, exposing everyone to a broad and wide world full of adventure and experiences.

In 1987, Norm and Jan shifted their Canadian base to Nanaimo. Norm worked on many Vancouver Island engineering projects and continued to accept work adventures to exotic locations such as Barbados. He was a long-time Rotary Club member and enjoyed time with good friends golfing and on couples getaways. In retirement, he and Jan continued to travel widely, including countless cruises through Europe, the Panama Canal, Australia, Fiji and Asia. His 90th birthday celebration in Kelowna, in September 2025, provided an opportunity for beach time, winery tours and golf with the whole family including Norm’s cherished grandchildren: Kayleigh (Calum Reid), Kieran, Alexandra and Ben.

In November 2025 Norm laid to rest his beloved wife of 61 years. Then cancer began to slow him down too and his last travel was to North Vancouver, to be close to family. In his final days, he said that he and Jan had lived a lucky life that was “never boring”. At his request, there will be no funeral. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that Norm’s friends consider a donation to their local library.
