Joan Christine Boxwell, February 23, 1966 – July 19, 2026

Joan Christine Boxwell passed away peacefully on July 19, 2026, at the age of 60. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Joan immigrated to Canada as a toddler with her family and spent her childhood in Mississauga, Ottawa, and Moncton before settling in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Family camping adventures across Eastern Canada sparked her lifelong appreciation for nature, wildlife, and exploration. Joan was known from an early age for her exceptional organization, attention to detail, and thoughtful nature—qualities that remained hallmarks of her character throughout her life. After graduating from Nanaimo Secondary School, she trained as a Medical Office Assistant at Vancouver Community College and built a respected career supporting physicians and specialists in Vancouver and Nanaimo. She also worked successfully as a freelance medical transcriptionist, earning the admiration of colleagues and patients alike for her reliability, professionalism, and kindness. A lover of photography, travel, and plants, Joan created warm and welcoming homes filled with lush greenery and displays of her photographic work. A memorable highlight of her life was a solo journey through Costa Rica, where she embraced new cultures, wildlife, and experiences with curiosity and enthusiasm. Joan was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and great-aunt. She delighted in celebrating the accomplishments of those she loved and was known for her thoughtful gestures, playful sense of humour, and unwavering encouragement. Her genuine interest in others, easy laughter, and gentle optimism made her a cherished presence in the lives of family and friends. Later in life, Joan found comfort and purpose in her personal faith and spiritual studies. She spoke openly of her peace and trust in God and found great meaning in her beliefs. Joan is survived by her mother, Marilyn; her siblings Janet (Hans), Tricia, Peter (Penny), Robin (Nicole), and Andrew; her nieces and nephews Leanna (Brian), Husayn (Lisa), Teya, and Rowan; and five beloved great-nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Robert. A green burial will take place on Salt Spring Island. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for their compassionate care. Joan will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
