2 injured in serious Horne Lake ATV accident

Apr 8, 2019 | 12:34 PM

PARKSVILLE — Two people were hospitlaized after being tossed from an ATV on a steep mountain trail on the north side of Horne Lake.

Arrowsmith Search and Rescue president Nick Rivers said they were tasked late Sunday afternoon to the Beaufort Range mountains after the quad hit a loose rock and flipped several times.

Both riders were ejected and the badly damged ATV rolled a further 200 feet away, Rivers said.

He said the male rider was flown to hospital in Victoria, while a female passenger was transported by ground ambulance to Nanaimo Hospital.

“The first thing we do is request a helicopter, put an advanced medical team on it and fly them up there right away,” Rivers said, referencing the seriousness of the call. “We don’t waste any time on that at all, we’ll fly anywhere we need to as fast as possible.”

Rivers said the injured riders, both in their 30s, were plucked from the scene with a rope. He said they were both wearing proper safety gear.

“We get a lot more of these types of tasks, starting now until about October. We train for it on how to do different extractions,” Rivers said.

Deep Bay Fire Dept. and BC Ambulance paramedics also responded, Rivers said.
