Nanaimo man pleads guilty to heinous sex crimes

Feb 27, 2019 | 4:45 PM

NANAIMO — A verdict awaits after a Nanaimo man admitted to disturbing sex offences involving a minor and possessing child porn images.

On Wednesday in BC Supreme Court in Nanaimo the man pleaded guilty to possessing and making child porn, and sexual assault.

During an agreed statement of facts it was revealed in 2015 the accused used a cell phone to film himself sexually assaulting a young child.

A sweeping publication ban applies to the case which does not allow the accused to be identified to protect the victim.

The accused was also in possession of more than 1,400 unique child porn images, court was told.

He was arrested in the summer of 2017.

In a pre-sentence report the accused said he felt guilt and shame for his actions. He said he shed many tears over the pain he caused to many people.

“I’m extremely remorseful, I hurt a lot of people…I was a dangerous person at the time, I should have sought help earlier. Other people had to suffer too because of my acting out,” the man stated.

The report’s author said the accused made significant progress around understanding his behaviour and self management.

The accused said he wants to get help and become a productive member of society.

He was visibly distraught sitting in the prisoner’s box during Wednesday’s proceedings. He wore a striped dress shirt and dress pants.

The Crown sought five-to-eight years in prison, while the defence lobbied for two-to-three years behind bars.

The accused, who’s not in custody, will likely be sentenced by Supreme Court Justice Stephen Kelleher some time in March.
