Handgun used in north Nanaimo gas station robbery

Jan 21, 2019 | 8:47 AM

NANAIMO — Police say it’s “very troubling” a handgun was used in the armed robbery of a gas station and convenience store.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien told NaniamoNewsNOW the Gas N Go at the corner of Turner Rd. and Uplands Dr.. was robbed around 8 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20.

It sparked a serious search, with readers all over the area reporting police cars stationed at nearly every block.

“Although we tracked him for over an hour, we eventually lost the track near the insection of Oliver Rd. and the Island Highway,” O’Brien said.

Though the surveillance footage from the store was described as poor, O’Brien said it was enough to give them a decent sketch of the suspect.

He’s a white man, between 30 and 40-years-old, possibly with a goatee and a very slim build.

Even with the lackluster surveillance footage, O’Brien was confident the suspect would be apprehended.

“These people like to talk and if people find out what’s going on in the community, we need to hear from them.”

Anyone with information is urged to call Nanaimo RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
