NANAIMO — A horrific double fatal crash near Nanaimo involved a driver who was convicted of dangerous driving causing death nearly 13 years prior.

The driver of a pickup police said was headed in the wrong direction on the Trans-Canada Hwy. just south of Nanaimo was identified as 31-year-old Kurtis Timothy.

Timothy, a Nanaimo man, was fleeing an attempted traffic stop in Harewood early Monday morning, according to police. He was spotted going the wrong way on the highway moments before the devastating crash.

Cliff Bishop, 54, was the driver of the northbound SUV.

Police said both men died at the scene of the head-on collision.

Court records showed Timothy, a prolific offender, was 19-years-old when he crashed a stolen vehicle on Hammond Bay Rd. in 2006. The wreck killed a passenger and Timothy pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death. He was sentenced to four months in jail and given a three-year driving ban.

His record is littered with convictions, including theft, uttering threats, mischief and driving offences.

In 2016, a B.C.-wide arrest warrant issued by police warned Timothy was considered armed and dangerous.

No other people besides Timothy and Bishop were involved in Monday’s crash, which police said happened just under a kilometre south of the Cedar Rd. intersection.

B.C.’s police watchdog is now overseeing an investigation into the events leading to the crash.
