NANAIMO — RCMP say one person is dead after a two-vehicle crash on the Trans Canada Hwy. in front of the Nanaimo Airport Monday afternoon.

RCMP said early indications are a southbound vehicle on the highway made a left turn in front of an oncoming vehicle.

"As a result, one person is confirmed deceased at the scene," police said in a statement.

Northbound traffic remains closed, while a detour is in place at Cedar Rd.

DriveBC expected the closure to be in effect until Monday at 10 p.m.

Motorists are asked to slow down in the area and follow the directions of flaggers on scene.

The investigation is in the early stages and no further information is available at this time, police said.
