VIU Mariners women’s soccer team wins PACWEST title

NANAIMO – The VIU Mariners women’s soccer team took home provincial gold on Saturday at the PACWEST Provincials.

Chloe Gummer and Maddy Dawson had the goals in a 2-0 win against host Capilano.

Defender Cara Dunlop was named tournament MVP because of her stellar work on the Mariners back line.

 

VIU earned a bye into the league championship match by putting up the best regular season record at five wins, two losses, and five draws.

The Mariners will have some more training time before heading back to the mainland for the CCAA Nationals hosted by Douglas College November 7-10.

Last week also saw the team honoured with individual awards and all-star selections.

Chloe Gummer was named PACWEST Player of the Year, Kevin Lindo won Coach of the Year, and Cara Dunlop was the Rookie of the Year.

Gummer, Maddy Dawson, Natsu Yayama and Drew Murray were chosen as conference all-stars.

Last week VIU was ranked 7thin the country with new rankings expected to be out later this week.
