3 injured in ‘unprovoked’ brawl in downtown Nanaimo

Sep 4, 2018 | 4:25 PM

NANAIMO — Three people were treated for injuries after a melee outside a downtown Nanaimo restaurant.

RCMP said the brawl started outside Food Koma on Commercial St. around 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 2, after the bars and restaurants closed.

Cst. Gary O’Brien said there’s three suspects who were part of a much larger crowd on the street, possibly affiliated with an out-of-province lacrosse team in Nanaimo for the 2018 President’s Cup tournament.

“Two men, possibly a woman, were provoking other individuals,” O’Brien said. “They allegedly assaulted a man, knocking him to the side walk, and then apparently assaulted a man and woman who were just inside the restaurant having something to eat.”

The larger crowd and the suspects took off by the time police arrived.

Despite the suspects possibly being involved with a lacrosse team, O’Brien said there was no trash talk between everyone involved leading up to the fight.

O’Brien said the first man attacked was “fairly knocked out” during the scrap. However, all three didn’t require further medical attention and declined additional care from paramedics.

Police are now searching for footage of the fight, hopefully from a cellphone taken by someone in the crowd.

If anyone has video of the brawl, they’re urged to call Nanaimo RCMP.
