UPDATE: Nanaimo RCMP say 22-year-old from Africa has been found

Aug 27, 2018 | 4:58 PM

UPDATE:  Nanaimo RCMP tweeted Tuesday morning that 22-year-old Abiola Abid Amidou has been found safe and sound.

He was reported missing by his family, who are living in Africa, on Saturday.

NANAIMO — Local police are confounded by a recent missing persons case.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said investigators have little to go on in their search for 22-year-old Abiola Abid Amidou, who appears to have lived in the area for at least a year.

“In fact, we don’t even know if he’s still in Nanaimo,” O’Brien said.

Amidou’s parents in Africa reported him missing on Saturday, Aug. 25 after they didn’t hear from him in over a week. They said Amidou always called them once a week and he’d also stopped posting on social media.

O’Brien confirmed Amidou’s phone was deactivated roughly a week ago.

“We don’t know where he lived, he’s had no police contact,” O’Brien said. “We know he did attend VIU in the fall of 2017 but they didn’t have any records of him.”

O’Brien emphasized Amidou isn’t in trouble with the law, they merely want to make sure he’s okay.

Amidou is six foot two with a slim build.

If anyone’s seen him, they’re urged to call Nanaimo RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
