Crash kills young Cedar woman

Jun 16, 2017 | 2:11 PM

NANAIMO — A 25-year-old Cedar woman is dead after a crash south of Nanaimo.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Wayne Vaughn said the northbound Ford Focus lost control on Cedar Rd. near Bennie Rd. around 9 p.m. on June 15.

“There’s a sweeping, dogleg curve in the road at that point and it appears that the vehicle lost control. The passenger side tires left the roadway a little bit and it looks like the driver may have overcorrected, shooting the vehicle across the road into a telephone pole,” Vaughn told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Vaughn said there were no witnesses to the crash and their investigation is still in its initial stages. “Speed and alcohol have not been ruled out at this time.”

“There’s always a story there and we get the story from the physical evidence,” Vaughn said. “No one actually saw it happen but there’s always a story from what we see on the roadway and where the collision happened…We usually come up with a good answer as to what had occurred.”

The driver’s side door of the car hit the pole, according to Vaughn.

The road was closed in the area for about three hours.
