Obama: My Brother’s Keeper program is ‘just the beginning’
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will be out of office when the third anniversary of the public-private initiative he started to help create educational and other opportunities for boys and young men of colour rolls around next year, so he celebrated a few weeks early on Wednesday.
Addressing a White House summit on the My Brother’s Keeper program, Obama urged more people to become mentors and role models to show young people from broken homes or poor or crime-ridden neighbourhoods that there is a better path for them to choose.
“This is just the beginning,” said Obama, who barely knew his father and was raised by his mother and her parents. “We are going to keep these efforts going to invest in our young people, to break down barriers that keep them from getting ahead and make sure that they’ve got a chance to contribute.”
“And we’re going to need more of you to be mentors and role models and for this next generation,” he said.
