Project protects Sewer Pipe in French Creek

Crews have finished laying sand and gravel to reinforce a 100 metre portion of beach in French Creek.

Crews addressed the section of Columbia Beach off the base of Teal Road, which has been eroding over the years.

Regional District of Nanaimo wastewater program coordinator Shelley Norum says a sewer pipe was exposed and requires better protection.

“We had a study done last year and it was recommended that for the remaining lifetime of the pipeline that we needed to protect it for a 50 year duration, and the amount of sand and gravel added is designed to protect the pipe for another 50 years,” said Norum.

The sewer pipe transfers waste from Qualicum Beach to the RDN’ s Pollution Control Centre in French Creek.
