Alexandra Lynn Shewaga, May 13, 1976 – July 7, 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alexandra Lynn Shewaga, who passed away on July 7 in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Alex was born May 13th, 1976, and is survived by her son Austin McEwan, mother, Lynn Shewaga, father, Stan Shewaga; her stepmother, Sue Vohanka; her brothers, Michael Shewaga, Chris Shewaga, and Shane Sampson; and her sister, Michelle Shewaga; nieces Nicole Shewaga, Jamie Shewaga, Gillian Chambers, and nephew Andrew Shewaga along with many extended family members and friends whose lives she touched over the years. As our family takes time to navigate this loss, we also recognize that Alex’s life was not without its struggles. The last 15 years brought significant challenges that affected Alex and those who loved her. While those years became part of her story, they do not define the person she was or the many years of memories that came before them. From a very young age, Alex seemed to grow up ahead of her years, showing a strong independent spirit early in life. Alex was a leader at heart, someone people looked up to, and above all, a survivor. Throughout much of her life, friends and family looked to Alex for guidance, direction, friendship, and support. She had a presence that left an impression on the people around her, and there are many who will remember the positive influence she had on their lives. Those are the memories our family chooses to hold closest—the years filled with family, friendship, strength, laughter, and the many moments that made Alex who she was. We encourage everyone who shared a place in Alex’s life to remember those moments as well and to reflect on the person they knew and the memories they shared with her. Alex was raised on Gabriola Island, a place that remained an important part of her story. A small celebration of life will be held there in the coming weeks, bringing together family and friends to remember Alex and pay their respects. For those wishing to attend the celebration of life or receive further information, please reach out to Nicole Shewaga or Mike Shewaga. May Alex be remembered not for the struggles she faced, but for the life she lived, the strength she carried, and the many lives she touched along the way. We will always remember her as someone who could light up a room with her presence.
