Dabrowski, Krejcikova advance at Cincinnati Open; Fernandez, Errani follow suit

CINCINNATI — Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Czechia’s Barbora Krejcikova have advanced at the Cincinnati Open.

They beat the fourth-seeded team of Spain’s Cristina Bucsa and American Nicole Melichar-Martinez 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 in the Round of 32 of the women’s doubles tournament on Monday. The match took one hour, 33 minutes to play.

It’s the first tournament where Dabrowski and Krejcikova have paired together.

They’ll face the unseeded Czech duo Linda Noskova and Marie Bouzkova in the Round of 16 on Wednesday morning.

Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., and partner Sara Errani of Italy needed one hour, 29 minutes to beat Tamara Korpatsch of Germany and British pro Emily Webley-Smith 6-2, 7-6 (2) on Monday night.

The Canadian and her women’s doubles partner won the first set in 31 minutes, but Korpatsch and Webley-Smith came on strong in the second set. In fact, they led 6-5 and serving for the win, but couldn’t close the deal.

Fernandez and Errani finished with two aces, 23 winners, one double fault and only nine of the match’s 34 unforced errors. They will play Chan Hao-ching of Taiwan and Maya Joint of Australia in the Round of 16.

Fernandez lost to Xiyu Wang of China on Sunday in the second round of the women’s singles event.
