Air support helps Nanaimo RCMP take dangerous drivers off the road
NANAIMO — A noticeable police presence in the skies above the Harbour City over the weekend has helped nab multiple problematic drivers.
RCMP Air 8, from the RCMP’s Comox Air Services division, was deployed to Nanaimo and worked with local officers in a traffic blitz in several areas of the community on Sunday, Aug. 9, leading to 46 traffic violations, 33 Motor Vehicle Act charges, one 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, and four vehicles impounded.
Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said while enforcement was across the city, several hotspots, including in Cinnabar and Extension, Departure Bay, and the Nanaimo Parkway, were focal points.
“Air-8 was incredible for the Parkway, because the vehicles are really travelling at a high rate of speed, and they are very easily tracking them and showing their locations so our members could set up accordingly.”
