Air support helps Nanaimo RCMP take dangerous drivers off the road

Of the four vehicle impoundments, two were for excessive speed, while the other two were for stunting-related offences.

Initially, the operation was to crack down on motorcyclists who O’Brien said have been taking too many liberties on the road in recent years.

He said many have a “blatant disregard for the rules of the road” by weaving in and out of traffic, stunting, or riding without license plates or insurance.

One third of Sunday’s enforcement actions were taken against motorcyclists.

“We were going after motorcyclists because it’s a real thorn of contention in our community, but what we found was a lot of vehicles were driving dangerously, excessive speed, and not complying with the Motor Vehicle Act…so a lot of them were targeted as well.”

O’Brien warned drivers they can expect to see more air support through the rest of the summer and at points year-round.

It’s all in a bid to curb growing risk on area roadways caused by dangerous driving practices.

“The expectation is from the public that we will address this issue. We’re concerned about the behaviours shown by the motorcyclists and the cars, we know that it’s going to be a serious accident or collision, and somebody is going to get hurt or die…we don’t want that to happen.”

Sunday’s operation was the result of “a lot of moving parts” coming together, O’Brien added, noting local members took the initiative to organize the event.
