NANAIMO — The recent BC Athetics Outdoor Track and Field Championships held fantastic results for the Nanaimo Track and Field Club.

NTFC earned six gold medals, four silvers and six bronze medals.

Tessa Bell has had an outstanding season and was one of the gold medal winners in the U-18 heptathlon.

She said there was a great sense of camaraderie among the Nanaimo athletes at the event.

“One of the fun things was hanging out with other Nanaimo athletes underneath our team tent. NTFC is a great club to be a part of. Lots of the athletes are good friends and we support each other through the competition.”

Bell also medaled at the BC high school provincials in June and the Canadian nationals back in March, where she competed up an age bracket.

She’ll also take part in the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships this August.

Along with Bell, Ember Vaitekunas won a pair of gold medals in the U-16 1200 metre and 2000 metre races at the provincials in Coquitlam.

Brynne Reilly in the U-16 800 metre, Finn Olsen in the U-16 pole vault and Evelyn Argyle-Anderson for the U-16 1500 metre steeplechase were the other first place finishers.

Vaitekunas and Reilly captured additional medals, a silver and bronze respectively.

NTFC athletes also had a strong medal haul in early June at the BC high school championships.

There were 13 medal wins for Nanaimo area athletes with Bell, Vaitekunas, Olsen and Reilly once again having excellent results and finishing on the podium.

Vancouver Island is set to host an upcoming high level meet July 18-19.

The BC Athletics Junior Development Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be hosted in Duncan.
