QUALICUM BEACH — Two people were sent to hospital, one in serious condition, after a head-on crash in Qualicum Beach.

Emergency services were called on Wednesday, June 17 just after 3:30 p.m. to Memorial Ave east of Rupert Rd. in response to a westbound Nissan Versa crossing the centre line and hitting an eastbound Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Oceanside RCMP report the drivers were the only people inside either vehicle, with both injured as a result of the collision on the undivided section of roadway.

“The driver of the Nissan was seriously injured and the driver of the Ram suffered minor injuries,” a statement from the detachment read. “The investigation is ongoing; however, alcohol and drug impairment have been excluded as a contributing cause.”

Sgt. Shane Worth said an air ambulance from B.C. Emergency Health Services was sent to the scene from nearby Qualicum Beach Airport, but it was not required to transport any patients to the hospital.

He said the Nissan driver was still being treated at the hospital Thursday morning, but said their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

“Yesterday it was a clear, sunny day, we’re looking at all aspects as to why this crash occurred, but until we are able to speak to a couple more witnesses and have a conversation with both drivers after they’ve been treated, and then we’ll be able to determine exactly what happened and how this occurred.”

Traffic was detoured around the scene for several hours while the drivers were tended to and investigators worked the scene.

Anyone with more information or dashcam footage is asked to contact the Oceanside RCMP non-emergency number at 250-248-6111.
