3 youth arrested for speeder fire

Jun 18, 2026 | 8:49 AM

Port Alberni RCMP say they arrested three youth who they believe set a historic rail car on fire.
The three were spotted by witnesses and caught on CCTV fleeing the rail yard Tuesday afternoon, moments before the 1930 APR Crummy Speeder erupted in flames.
Alberni Pacific Railway Operations Manager Richard Spencer says their equipment, railcars, and even volunteer’s vehicles have been inexplicably targetted by vandals over the past few weeks.
“We haven’t done anything wrong,” he said. “As a tourist railway we’re for trying to provide the best service for the community and for the tourists, and then things like this happen along with our volunteer’s personal vehicles being broken into, wires being ripped out causing thousands and thousands of dollars in damages, and then this.”
No word on when the youth will appear in court.
