Port Alberni Pride events reinstated after earlier threats

PORT ALBERNI — Community leaders and activists raised the pride flag at city hall yesterday, recognizing June as Pride Month.

But kickoff events had been cancelled after the main organizer said she was recently threatened while walking Roger Creek trails.

Janet Nass said she then realized the insults and threats were a reminder about why pride events are still needed.

“People are emboldened these days for various reasons and that’s the scary part for me,” she said. “There might’ve been a time where I would’ve not taken that to heart. People are gonna say stuff. But I felt differently this time, just because there’s so much hate right now, but that was kind of an awakening for me so yeah it’s still going on.”

Nass said after cancelling events she received an outpouring of support, which helped her reinstate celebrations.

“It’s about human rights,” she said. “It’s absolutely about human rights and we all deserve them, we all deserve to be treated with love and kindness and respect and so just get out there and celebrate with us.”

A dance and small parade was held yesterday afternoon and Nass said the incident is a continuing example of why Pride started in the first place.
