Oceanside woman receives three broken ribs after collision with dirt bike riders

QUALICUM BEACH — A local woman is nursing three broken ribs and other injuries after being knocked off her bicycle and into a ditch over the weekend.

The 63-year-old was riding along the 1100 block of Meadowood Way just before noon on Sunday, May 17, when a group of four dirt bikers began to pass her.

Sgt. Shane Worth said the group very obviously saw the woman.

“One of the riders in the group signalled to everybody else to slow down, however, while passing the cyclist, one of the dirt bikers struck the cyclist and forced her into the ditch. The bikers rode off, leaving the cyclist in the ditch for passersby to come upon her.”

Those passersby called 911, and the woman was taken to hospital with multiple broken ribs and superficial injuries, with Worth noting “she’s in a lot of pain.”

The woman was able to tell police the rider who collided with her obviously knew the incident had occurred, as he told the woman he didn’t mean to hit her before riding off.

No witnesses saw the incident, according to Worth, and no description was able to be provided by the woman, other than it was a group of four riding along the roadway at around 11:45 a.m.

Police are asking the individual to come forward to get their version of events.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the Oceanside RCMP detachment at 250-248-6111.
