80+ BC Curling Championship comes to Qualicum Beach

QUALICUM BEACH — A group of athletes are proving age is only a number when it comes to playing the sport you love.

The Qualicum & District Curling Club on Memorial Ave. are hosting the 2026 BC 80+ Curling Championship on Wednesday, March 18 and Thursday, March 19.

Put on by the Pacific Coast Masters Curling Association (PCMCA), zone four director Rick Dunn said they’re the only organization in the country which promotes, sponsors, and works with curlers over the age of 60.

“Those are people that probably curled as kids in high school or something, and then raised families and quit curling. Now they’re retired and wanna come back to it, so we got funding available for that.”

Eight teams of octogenarians will play for the championship over two days in Qualicum Beach, including teams from Oceanside and Nanaimo, while the rest are making the journey from the mainland.

Dunn, who turns 79 this year, said this is his 70th year curling and thanks the PCMCA for providing him with the opportunity and support to keep playing.

“For seniors, you wanna remain active, or you die, and curling is a sport you can start when you’re nine years old and finish when you’re 90-years-old.”

This is the second time they’ve held this 80+ Curling Championship, with last year’s event taking place in Langley, with fewer teams than this year.

Kelowna has been picked to host the 2027 event, and Dunn hopes Nanaimo might be open to hosting in 2028.

The two-day event is free to attend, with the first draw at 10:00 a.m. both days.

Opening ceremonies with local dignitaries take place at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, with the final championship game on Thursday at 2 p.m.
