NANAIMO — The Clippers put a four game losing streak behind them with a 5-3 victory over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs.

The first period was a wild back and forth affair with the teams trading six goals.

With the teams playing four on four Caden Okovita opened the scoring for Nanaimo on a beautiful passing play.

Alberni Valley tied the contest moments later thanks to a deflection goal by Eric Lund.

The Bulldogs forged in front on a heavy shot off the stick of Grady Magner on a man advantage.

Miller Kay brought Nanaimo back to even, by scoring a shorthanded breakaway goal, and then the teams traded power play markers to end the period.

Former Clipper Kye Benoche gave Alberni another lead before Jack Rimmer tied the game at 3-3 in the period’s final minute.

Nanaimo coach Colin Birkas was ejected in the first period along with a bench minor call after a heated exchange with the on ice officials.

The Clippers also opted to switch out starting goalie Matthew Hutchison for Eliot Seguin-Lescarbeau to begin the middle frame.

Although there was no scoring in the second the Clippers outshot the Bulldogs 19-9.

Nanaimo fired another 22 shots at netminder Derik Brouillard in the third period and finally Tanner Bruender banged home a bouncing puck with just under four minutes remaining in the game.

Jack Rimmer added an empty netter and his two goal performance earned him the game’s first star.

The final shots were 53-27 for the Clippers with Nanaimo going 1/6 on the man advantage and 2/4 killing penalties.

After the victory the Clippers hold an eight point lead over both the Bulldogs and Grizzlies for second place in the Coastal West division.

There are six games remaining in the BCHL season and five of those six are at home for Nanaimo.

The Clippers next game is on March 14 at 7 p.m. against the Coquitlam Express.
