120 fewer students forecast for 2026-27

School Board prepares for cuts

The Pacific Rim School District is facing cutbacks over the coming years, and has already reduced expenses by $1.2 million to prepare.

School District 70 Board Chair Cynthia Orr says funding is based on enrollment, which they expect will decrease by 3% next year.

“It’s mostly that we have a very large graduating class this year and a smaller kindergarten class coming in,” she said. “So it’s not that students are leaving the district, it’s more that we have a big grad class and it’s the biggest grad class this year in Ucluelet, but a smaller kindergarten class coming in across the district.”

Orr said they are projecting a decrease of 120 students next year, which will decrease their $69 million budget.

She said cuts made will only have a limited impact on students, which was their first priority in budget discussions.
