Protests continue against supportive housing

Jan 27, 2026 | 9:08 AM

More than 50 people were outside City Hall yesterday afternoon, protesting council’s decision to allow a supportive housing project on 2nd Avenue.

Inside City Council chambers dozens of people waited for their chance to voice their opinions during question period but were denied.

Matt Stabler lives near the proposed project site and said he was upset with councils decisions.

“I’m very frustrated,” he said. “It seems that they really don’t want to hear from us. They deny us the opportunity to discuss ‘the elephant in the room’, and that’s the truth. They’ve done their rezoning and they consider that part to be a done-deal.”

Stabler says the city’s decision to approve the project has caused neighbouring property values to crash.

“It’s so frustrating. I talked to my realtor and I said ‘if this proceeds I’m probably going to move’ and he said ‘good luck, the value of your property went down 30% the day they signed off on the rezoning issue’. That hits me so hard. I can’t afford to sell and move, so I’m stuck because of their decision.”.

Stabler told City Council that the 6-storey, 55-unit facility will be “the largest crackhouse the city has ever seen”.
