Internal Medicine specialists needed

Island Health actively recruiting for ICU

While there’s no firm date of re-opening the Intensive Care Unit at West Coast General Hospital, administrators are actively searching for replacement staff.
Island Health VP Medicine Dr. Ben Williams says the hunt is on for the highly specialized medical personnel.
“The scenario we’re in is that we’re down one internal medicine physician, we are short some of the highly specialized nurses that we need in critical care, so it’s going to take some time to recruit those people but it’s something we’re working on every day,” he said.
Dr. Williams said people in Port Alberni should feel confident that they can still depend on a high level of emergency services at West Coast General despite the temporary ICU closure.
‘When a patient comes into the emergency room at West Coast General Hospital one of my colleagues is going to assess them, we’re going to work with that patient to make sure care needs and get them the care they need,” he said. “Most of the time that care is going to be in the hospital, but  there’s some services that not every hospital can provide and if that patient needs intensive care or high level cardiac care, we’re going to get that patient safely to wherever they need to be to get that care.”
