NANAIMO — A 25-year-old man visiting the area from the United States has died after an early morning crash.

Emergency services responded to the 1600 block of Bowen Rd., near Pryde Ave., just after 2 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14 after a single vehicle lost control and rolled.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW the northbound vehicle wound up in the southbound lane outside a restaurant.

“[Investigators] believe that the vehicle was going northbound when the driver, for unknown reasons lost control, veered off the road and struck a light pole. The driver died at the scene, while the passenger sustained just minor injuries and was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons.”

NanaimoNewsNOW has learned the victim was visiting the Nanaimo region and was set to return to the United States in the coming days for work.

Police say their investigation is continuing and they have not ruled out speed, alcohol or weather conditions at the time of the crash, as contributing factors.

A section of Bowen Rd. was closed for several hours as a result of the crash, as crews from Nanaimo RCMP, BC Emergency Health Services, Nanaimo Fire Rescue and the BC Coroners Service attended the scene.
