Nanaimo Food truck location calendar goes live

NANAIMO — A new online calendar is dishing up dates of where Nanaimo’s food trucks will be set up.

On Aug. 1, the City of Nanaimo debuted its Food Truck Scheduling Calendar at Nanaimo.ca/foodtruck, which takes the guess work out of where Nanaimo’s various meals on wheels will be.

Replacing a food vender booking system managed and maintained solely by City of Nanaimo staff, the new publicly accessible portal states what food trucks will be set up and where, several weeks in advance.

A filter allows users to select specific food trucks among nine public park locations.

Heidi Davidson, permit centre and business licensing manager for the City of Nanaimo, stated previously food truck would email their placement requests on the first business day of each month, requiring back-and-forth communication to assist vendors.

“The new calendar was developed to alleviate this time-consuming process and to provide vendors more autonomy. With the new calendar, vendors have the ability to book themselves into designated locations in 2-hour increments, change or cancel bookings,” Davidson wrote in a statement to NanaimoNewsNOW.

There are currently 37 licensed food trucks and trailers conducting business in Nanaimo, Davidson noted, of which she stated four operate on private property, such as outside large shopping centres.

Currently, the City’s food truck scheduling tool shows listings through the end of September.
