NANAIMO — A woman has died after being hit by a vehicle along the Trans Canada Hwy.

Police were called to Hwy. 1, near Morden Rd. around 10:30 p.m. on Monday, June 16 after reports came in of a vehicle colliding with someone on the highway.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Sherri Wade told NanaimoNewsNOW a 46-year-old woman was pronounced dead on scene.

“The driver was driving northbound on the highway in the fast lane, and the pedestrian was possibly walking northbound along the barrier in the northbound lane and stepped into the vehicle lane.”

Wade said the driver simply didn’t see the woman walking in between the highway lanes until it was too late.

There is no criminality suspected in the incident, with Wade noting the driver stayed on scene and fully cooperated with police.

Wade added the driver was “obviously very upset”.

RCMP Collision Analysts, as well as staff from the BC Coroners Service attended the scene, with the highway closed in both directions for around four hours.

Detours were established through Cedar to guide vehicles around the crash site.
