‘It’s a really good thing:’ Nanaimo senior credits e-bike for keeping him active and social
NANAIMO — Pete Caljouw has worn many hats in his life.
He was a Navy man, a logger, a transit operator, a wildlife photographer and a minor league baseball coach.
Now 89 years old, Caljouw has added e-bike enthusiast to the list, making the switch to assisted pedalling to help navigate the steep terrain of the mid-Island as he photographed local wildlife.
“It started getting hard for me as I got older and older. I had to figure out how I was going to get up some of these hills and trails, especially over on Denman Island…it took me about half an hour to get up the hill walking, and then the next thing I know, it’s taken me an hour to get up the hill. I didn’t like that so much.”
