NANAIMO — A body was located from an Old Victoria Rd. Nanaimo home after it was destroyed by fire early Wednesday morning.

The fire at 1019 Old Victoria Rd. broke out just after 5:00 a.m. with Nanaimo RCMP reporting later in the day that the occupant of the home was missing.

Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien with the Nanaimo RCMP said a body was recovered by Nanaimo Fire Rescue (NFR) in the afternoon.

“Based on the evidence at hand, what we can say at this point is there’s nothing deemed suspicious about the fire. We’re not saying anything about the deceased person and we’re working with the BC Coroners service.”

Cst. O’Brien earlier told NanaimoNewsNOW that witnesses who called 911 to report the fire stated they believed an occupant of the home was seen re-entering the home after the fire.

O’Brien said the scene is still being held, but it’s for insurance purposes as the premises is currently not secured.

NFR Asst. fire chief Troy Libbus said they got the call at 5:09 a.m. to the structure fire, with five engines initially responding.

“Upon arrival, it was fully involved and crews worked really hard to knock down the fire and get a search in and unfortunately, there was a fatality. The fire is undetermined at this time, and it’s still under investigation,” Libbus told NanaimoNewsNOW.
